Expo 2010: U.S. 'late' as S.F. gets spotlight
San Francisco Gate 2009-12-2
What the 2008 Olympics did for Beijing - blasting China's capital onto the world stage - Expo 2010 will do for San Francisco's sister city, Shanghai. "In terms of expos, it will create world history," said Shanghai's Vice Mayor Yang Xiong at Tuesday night's promotional dinner at the St. Francis Yacht Club. Why isn't a U.S. presence featured in the 50-page glossy brochure touting the expo? That's because, until recently, there wasn't going to be one, apart from corporate pavilions representing the likes of Cisco Systems, Coca-Cola, IBM and GM (jointly, with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.). The U.S. was "late," said Yang, diplomatically.
"Until Ms Clinton committed her personal prestige and the resources of her office, it was not at all clear the U.S. would participate," said Jose Villareal, Clinton's point person for the U.S. pavilion, who attended Tuesday night's gathering. The pavilion has since raised $45 million in corporate contributions, including $5 million from Chevron Corp., qualifying the San Ramon oil company as a "global sponsor." Other Bay Area contributors in the $1 million-plus range include Intel Corp. and Visa Inc. E&J Gallo Winery is providing the wine to be served "in the Pavilion's fine dining area." Clinton says she is definitely going to Expo 2010. A mayoral colleague said Gavin Newsom will definitely be visiting Shanghai next year.

Denmark will bring a million liters of seawater from the Copenhagen Harbor to a pool in its pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The steel structure of Denmark's 3,000-square-meter pavilion was finished yesterday. The water - an apt setting for the iconic statue "Little Mermaid," which will similarly make the trip from Denmark - will demonstrate Copenhagen's success in cleaning up its harbor that was polluted with industrial wastes 20 years ago but is safe for swimming today.

World Expo planning shifts into high gear. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton emphasized the importance of participating in the U.S.A. Pavilion in Shanghai during a visit to the construction site. Clinton working her magic to woo backers to expo dream
China Daily 2009-11-17
If you build this, they will come. Hillary Clinton, the United States secretary of state, refashioned yesterday a line from the US movie Field of Dreams to urge American companies to sponsor the country's pavilion at next year's World Expo in Shanghai. With the building in place, Clinton, in her second visit to China as secretary of state, is hoping more investors will contribute another $20 million to meet the $61 million budget of the pavilion.
And she wants more visitors, too. "We are building it, and we believe when the expo opens in 166 days, 70 million people will come. And with this rain today, maybe 100 million people, with even greater good fortune, will come." The secretary of state made the remarks at the construction site of the US pavilion in the Expo Garden in heavy, cold rain, described by Shanghai Vice-Mayor Yang Xiong as "rain of good fortune" in line with a Chinese tradition.
BLOG: Amit Midha: I met Hillary Clinton in Shanghai
Yesky 2009-11-18
This Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Shanghai. I was honored to attend the welcome ceremony. Clinton extended her appreciation to all the sponsors of the U.S. Pavilion. We became the Official Computer Sponsor of the U.S. Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010 at an early time, before the U.S. Pavilion program was proposed. We hope that our action will motivate other enterprises to support U.S. Pavilion together with us. And we expect the event will be a big success and more visitors will come to visit Shanghai Expo.
The theme, “Better city, better life” provides us a good opportunity to show American innovation, and we will share our innovative idea with all the countries in the world. I hope our efforts will further strengthen Sino-US relations.

Hilary Clinton: Spark plug of USA Pavilion drive
Xinhua 2009-11-16
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid a visit to 2010 Shanghai Expo site on Nov. 16. She has been considered as the spark plug of USA Pavilion drive.
Affected by the global financial crisis, whether the United States will attend 2010 China Shanghai Expo was a big question. Jose H. Villarreal, U.S. Commissioner General of Section of the U.S. Exhibition to World Expo 2010, repeatedly expressed that America had faced many challenges, but they never gave up. Villarreal said, “This firm idea comes from our Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She promoted the progress of the United States to attend Expo. She told American people that 2010 Shanghai Expo is a very important global event, so we must attend Expo and we must show in Shanghai.”
The Pavilion’s total budget is US$61 million. Although the global financial crisis has a tremendous impact on fund raising, the support from American people of high level and the attractiveness from the fast-growing Chinese market infuse American enterprises with confidence to attend Expo.
Obama pleased to visit Shanghai Expo next year
Xinhua 2009-11-16
The US believes that freedom of expression and political participation are universal values, Barack Obama told an audience of young Shanghai students today, in a townhall-style meeting streamed live on the White House website, broadcast on a local Shanghai television station and carried as text on a major Chinese portal. The question-and-answer session took around an hour with around 300 students, which was Obama’s sole meeting with the Chinese public during his three-day visit to the country.
“I know this is going to be a major focus of the Shanghai World Expo, is the issue of clean energy, as I learned from the Mayor. And so I would love to attend. I'm not sure yet what my schedule is going to be, but I'm very pleased that we're going to have an excellent U.S. pavilion at the Expo, and I understand that we expect as many as 70 million visitors here. So it's going to be very crowded and it's going to be very exciting,” the President said when a Fudan student asked whether he will visit the Shanghai Expo next year.
Since Chicago, Obama’s hometown has had two world expos in its history, and both of those expos ended up being tremendous boosts for the city, Obama said he was confident that the same thing will happen in Shanghai.
Hilary Clinton visits Shanghai Expo site in rain
International Finance News 2009-11-17
It started to rain continuously since Nov 15, making the Shanghai weather damp and cold. Despite the seeper everywhere in the Expo site and the heavy rain, Hilary Clinton visited the USA Pavilion construction site on the early morning to Nov 16.
Although the U.S. signed participation deal in early July, the 61 million dollars required to build and run the pavilion has still been a problem. According to the pavilion’s steering committee official Frank Lavin’s disclosure, they have landed $47 million by last Friday. Clinton thanked all the sponsors who have pledged to support the U.S. Pavilion, especially Boeing, which doubled its donation yesterday to $2 million, and P&G, which signed sponsorship contract with the pavilion organizer later yesterday.

Hillary Clinton wants your money
Shanghaiist 2009-11-16
Making a pit stop during the Obama Administration’s Blonde Ambition tour of Asia, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid a visit to the 2010 Expo site earlier today. Secretary Clinton addressed a squadron of journalists in front of the site for the future United States pavilion, among other things asking for increased contributions from American businesses, as the U.S. had raised two-thirds of the expo participation cost as of September.
Clearly the US 2009 Pavilion paraphernalia aren't selling as well as one might hope, which might explain why news about the funding for the USA pavilion hasn't changed in the past few weeks. Despite reports that an influx of sponsorship was underway in late September, Secretary Clinton made it clear that businesses that had previously been considering a donation were still doing just that – considering.
"I know there are some audiences still contemplating sponsorship and maybe in negotiation with the U.S. pavilion team," she said. "Now is the time to join this effort. We want to assemble the strongest team of partners possible." Guess we'll have to wait until next summer to see whether the USA pavilion is a glamorous spectacle or a pile of well-placed cardboard and glue.

She thanked companies that have already pledged money for their belief "in what this USA pavilion can do to strengthen cooperation and partnership between the American people and the people of China." Introducing the secretary of state on Monday, US Expo Commissioner General Jose Villarreal said Clinton had said she would "personally build the pavilion brick by brick if she had to."
Frank Lavin, a former US ambassador to Singapore who is chairing the steering committee for the US pavilion, told AFP that 47 US million of the 61 US million dollars needed for the event had been raised as of Friday. "We feel pretty good about that. We're still working on it. It's coming along step by step," Lavin said by telephone, calling Clinton the "spark plug of enthusiasm" behind the project.

"It would (have been) a huge embarrassment not just to the Chinese but to us as Americans to be the only major country not present," added Jose Villarreal, the U.S. Commissioner General to the 2010 World Exposition. To date, about $47 million has been committed, from General Electric, Pepsi, Chevron and others. The U.S. pavilion is under construction. Clinton was to meet with more potential U.S. sponsors Monday.

Secretary Clinton confirms her strong support for U.S. representation at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the USA Pavilion team led by Ellen Eliasoph and Nick Winslow
In a letter dated March 30, 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed strong support for American representation at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and for the USA Pavilion team led by Ms. Ellen Eliasoph and Mr. Nick Winslow.
In the letter, Secretary Clinton emphasized the importance of U.S. participation in the Expo, a major global event with an expected audience of 70 million visitors, as an opportunity to showcase American business, culture and values. Equally important is the opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between the American and Chinese people.
Since the beginning of the State Department’s tender process, AmCham Shanghai has been active in promoting interest, participation and sponsorship of the USA Pavilion by connecting members who wish to contribute with organizers. Together with the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Cooperation and USA Pavilion organizers, AmCham Shanghai has held a series of events for members to learn about Expo opportunities.
In accordance with U.S. legal requirements, the USA Pavilion is being funded and operated through a non-profit organization co-chaired by Ellen Eliasoph and Nick Winslow. Ambassador Frank Lavin, former U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, has been appointed chair of the USA Pavilion Steering Committee and will assist the USA Pavilion team as it raises funds and prepares for construction and operation of the pavilion. The U.S. Department of State is prohibited by Federal Law from spending appropriated funds to participate in expositions such as Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Therefore, U.S. private sector participation is essential to raise the necessary funds to design, build and operate the USA Pavilion.
